Key Club

Key Club is an international organization led by students focused on providing service opportunities, character enrichment, and the development of leadership abilities. Any student looking for a chance to take initiative in their community should consider joining the Bluefield High School Key Club supervised by Sherry Desjardin and Mark Warner and led by President (). Not only would they be provided with at least 35 community service hours and an impressive resume, students would be given the resources to become an active advocate in their community, country, and even world while making a few friends along the way.

(Last year, Key Club had a large agenda to match their desire to help. Several endeavors included visiting the Union Mission monthly, trick-or-treating for UNICEF (raising money for “The Eliminate Project”), cleaning up Bluefield City Park, and also attending several conventions where both the club and its officers received prestigious awards. Key Club also sent three students to an international convention for the second consecutive year. With that agenda behind them, Key Club has an even more successful schedule in mind for the 2015-2016 year, starting with a pancake breakfast at Applebee's on August 29th at 8 am. They plan on continuing their work with the Union Mission, and they also have a few more surprises in the works.)

As a new year flourishes, students are strongly encouraged to get involved; Key Club is a great way to do that. Alongside the service hours, another irrefutable plus is clubbers will be adopted into a family concerned with doing what is best for the people and area around them. Mark Warner, a lifetime Key Club member says, “The most fun I had as a high schooler was in Key Club, and I've stayed friends with my Key Club friends my whole life. If the folks I went to school with knew how much fun we all had and how much we helped the community, they would've joined. It really helped us grow.”

If a student is pondering whether they should join this club, perhaps the real question they should be asking themselves is why wouldn't they join Key Club? Any student wishing to give Key Club a try should attend meetings in Mrs. Desjardin's room every Tuesday at 7:30 or talk to one of the officers listed below.

Key Club is an international student led organization. Key Club focuses on service, leadership skills, and character building. Bluefield High School has an award winning Key Club. For the past 2 years, it was won the distinguished club award on the state level. Over 100 community service hours were performed this year alone. Every first Monday of the month, members volunteer at the Union Mission. There, they fold donated clothes, make hygiene packets, restock the pantry, and cook food for people in need throughout the community. Also, club members have raised $300 for the Eliminate project. Eliminate, sponsored by UNICEF, helps mothers in third world countries get vaccinated for maternal and neonatal tetanus. This allows the mothers to have healthy babies and saves millions of lives. Every 11 minutes, a baby dies from contracting tetanus due to unsanitary birthing conditions.  Other service projects this year include breast cancer awareness campaigns, care cards for Children’s Miracle Network, and park cleanups.

Members also attended three Key Club conventions this year:

International Convention: Anaheim, CA

Fall Rally: Charleston,WV

District Convention: Morgantown, WV

Mrs. Desjardins is the faculty adviser for the club. Meetings are held in her room, 219, before and after school every Tuesday. You are welcome to attend. Come to whichever meeting is more convenient for you.

Key Club is a student-led community service organization.  BHS Key Club has had a very successful Key Club year so far. After winning a distinguished club award last March, Key Clubbers were excited to begin the next school year with service. Over the summer, members helped with various bake/hot dog sales to raise money for a family in need.  In August, the club, in partnership with JROTC, collected several bags of coffee and creamer to donate to the Beckley Veterans Center.   In November, Key Clubbers went to Charleston to celebrate service with other members from around the state. Our club had the most attendance out of the many other schools present! Every month, students travel to the Union Mission after school to volunteer.
These, of course, are just some highlights of the many projects conducted this year. If you want to know more about joining this organization, you are welcome to come to our meetings every Tuesday in Ms. Desjardins' room. We meet at 7:30 and 3:30. Come to whichever meeting is more convenient for you!
