Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review

Article by Peyton Hart

12/8/15

This November, the final movie of The Hunger Games Trilogy was released. Mockingjay Part 2 was produced based on the books written by Suzanne Collins. The movie focused on the main character, Katniss Everdeen, and what she represents in the uprisings. The Capitol, hosting the Hunger Games for 75 years, is being pushed to the limit by the people of the nation. For the first time in years, people are taking a stand against the Capitol, and Katniss becomes their symbol of the rebellion. She becomes known as “The Mockingjay” and “The Girl on Fire.” This movie focuses mostly on the action part of the story, Katniss and the citizens of Panem against President Snow and the Capitol, but it also focuses on romance. Katniss finds herself falling for not only one but two male characters that are very significant to Katniss and her life since the beginning of the rebellion.

Mockingjay Part 2

Article by Amaya Brooks

12/7/15

Mockingjay Part 2 was a great ending to the exciting series of The Hunger Games. After all she’s been through, Katniss Everdeen is finally close to overthrowing the capitol. I won’t give away any details, but the movie was really good in my opinion. I’ve heard some would say it was a little boring, but I think it was exciting in a lot of ways. For example, there were a couple twists that were very interesting. However, if you’ve read the series, then you’d probably be expecting all of the twists. Either way the movie was a really excellent ending to The Hunger Games.

Neko Atsume

Article by Destany Goodloe

12/3/15

Neko Atsume is a fun and endearing game, and is now available in English. You can also play this game on your iOS and Android device. The newest version of Neko Atsume adds more rare cats, uncommon items, and provides more remodeling options. The premise is simple: You buy and place toys on your virtual backyard. Cats come, play, and give you some gold or silver fish once they leave. You can then buy more items with those fish to attract more of the cats. At first, you will see few cats having a ball in your backyard, but soon there will more adorable kitties playing with toys. The more expensive/deluxe items you place in the backyard, means that more cats will show up and play. Friends of mine had this game and played it, showing off their cats, and I downloaded it as well this week. It’s simple and a fun way to pass time.

90’s R&B
Article by Breyanna Woods

12/2/15

There are tons of different genres of music, but my all-time favorite would be 90’s R&B. There’s a difference from today as music to the music back in the day. The music back in the day was REAL music. They sang and rapped about real stuff. Not about money, having nice things, or exploiting women. Not to mention the beats were much better as well. I wish people still liked that kind of music. The older generation likes that kind of music, but Lord bless our generation. Please. I think there’s a little hope for us, but at this rate who knows. I think music has a huge influence on what we do today, and once people realize that, then we may be in good shape.

Harry Potter Book Series
Article by Peyton Hart

11/30/15

It’s almost impossible to not know about Harry Potter in this day and time. The books have now been produced as movies, making them even more popular for non-readers. The books consist of 7 books, all following the same characters. When Harry Potter finds out that he is a wizard at a very young age, he begins school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He becomes best friends with Ron and Hermione during his first year at Hogwarts. Ron, Harry, and Hermione go on many adventures that the average human could only dream of. The series follows each character and their development with relationships between others and themselves. The first book begins at the easiest reading level, and as they go, they work their way up to a higher reading level. If you are interested in fantasy books, definitely give this series a try.

Home Alone

I love Christmas time. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It snows, and it's pretty amazing. There’s no better way to bring in the holidays than watching Home Alone. Home Alone comes on at any time of the year, but the best time to watch it is mid-November until the New Year’s. Home Alone is about this little boy, Kevin, whose family forgets him behind on Christmas. The family travels to Paris, and then his mom remembers that she didn’t get him out of the attic. Kevin was fine until some bad guys figured out that he was home alone and set out to rob him! Kevin comes up with multiple devious plans to keep himself alive. You’ll have to watch the movie to know the rest of what happens!

Made In the A.M by One Direction

Article by Samantha Hicks

11/23/15

One Direction’s fifth album, Made In the A.M., arrives at a strange time in the band’s existence. Not only did Zayn Malik leave the group in early 2015, but the other members also announced they’re taking a break from 1D duties in 2016. More than anything, Made In the A.M. strives for timelessness. The ballad “If I Could Fly” gives each band member a chance to take the vocal spotlight, while featuring only piano and watercolor strings as decoration. Made In the A.M. isn’t a bitter album, and it’s not interested in female character assassination. Like previous One Direction albums, its lyrics depict fairy-tale, aspirational romances, and characterize women like treasure. They’ve gone out on a high note because Made In the A.M. is One Direction’s best, most accomplished album.

Pentatonix

Article by Destany Goodloe

11/20/15

Pentatonix, sometimes known as PTX, is an American a cappella group consisting of five vocalists, Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grassi. Their work, which mostly consists of covers for popular pop songs, has recently been branching out to feature original works by the group. Their first original song, Love Again, has been released, surprising and pleasing their fans with their outrageous costumes and catchy lyrics. Their fanbase continues to grow and is estimated to always grow as the group reaches new heights. (Personally, I love their works, too.)

We Are Your Friends

Article by Breyanna Woods

11/19/15

Earlier in the year, a movie called We Are Your Friends came out. They made a big deal and spent a lot of money on advertising the movie. Well, I finally watched it, and it was AWFUL. The star actor was Zac Efron. That was a plus, because he’s hot, but I didn’t like him in the movie. The movie had no theme to it, there was no point in it. I watched it for about 30 minutes and it had no point. All that happened was the people played EDM music and partied! Next time you have a chance, watch it and find out for yourself.

The Boondock Saints

Article by Breyanna Woods

11/19/15

This week Mike and I watched a movie called The Boondock Saints. It was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s about two brothers who kill bad people. The brothers are very religious and go to church every Sunday. They mainly kill mobsters and drug dealers. It all started with them at a bar and a bunch of mobsters come and jump them. The brothers get revenge and hold their own when it comes crunch time. In the end, they almost get caught, BUT there was a huge plot twist! You have to watch it and find out.

Spotify

Article by Amaya Brooks

11/17/15

If you haven’t heard of this app, it’s great. It’s kind of like Pandora, but So. Much. Better. You have a “Your Music” section, and as you follow different artists they will be added to your list. My favorite part is that you can get a lot more specific. For example, just like you add artists to your music, you can add specific albums, songs, and Spotify even has their own playlists for what type of mood you’re in. I would always get frustrated with Pandora because they wouldn’t just play the artist I wanted to hear, they would play tons of other artists. With this app, they only play that certain artist, but sometimes they will play suggested songs (definitely not as often as Pandora does.)

The Best App Ever

Article by Breyanna Woods

11/16/15

Wattpad is an amazing app. You can get unlimited books, FOR FREE! There are all kinds of books on the app. All you have to do is register, and boom you’re set. The books written in the app are written by regular people instead of professional writers. That is one of the downfalls. Sometimes people don’t use spell check, or they’ll type how they talk. There are plenty of books on the site that are well written. After you finish a book, you put it in your archives. I currently have about 25 books in my archives, and about 10 in my library. Another downfall about the site is you have to wait on people to update their stories, but most of the time it’s completely worth it. So the text time you’re on the play store or the app store, stop and get the app! You won’t regret it!

Se7en

Article by Samantha Hicks

11/16/15

“Seven” (or sometimes stylized as “Se7en”) is a psychological thriller that came into theatres in 1995. The movie stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. The movie is about a new detective, David Mills, coming in and being paired with a retiring detective, William Somerset on a case that is very sinister. The case is about a serial killer who keeps centering his murders around the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins being glutton, lust, sloth, envy, greed, pride, and wrath. The entire movie is a thrill ride, always having twists and turns while trying to figure out who the murderer is. The movie is amazing, with a horrifying ending that will have you gaping.

American Horror Story

Article by Samantha Hicks

11/10/15

American Horror Story is one of the most popular television shows in the country right now. The show was created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Fulchuk in 2011. Each season is basically a miniseries, each one having a different plot line. The show is critically acclaimed, especially Jessica Lange. She has received two Emmy awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performances. The show is very well written, each of the stories for each season being very interesting and terrifying! The horror show is genuinely scary and has very intense moments. The show is highly recommended, and for good reason. It is a good show to check out.

Max

Article by Destany Goodloe and Caitlin Belcher

11/10/15

Max is a movie about a trained dog that helped US Marines in Afghanistan on his return to the U.S. He is adopted by his handler's family after suffering a traumatic experience. When I watched this movie, it was gripping the entire way through. I didn’t expect a few of the turns and lines of the plot, but overall I enjoyed this movie. If anyone is looking for a great movie about love, dogs, or war, I’d highly recommend Max as the best option.

Black Mass

Article by Destany Goodloe and Caitlin Belcher

11/4/15

Black Mass is the true story of Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp), the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston who later became an FBI informant to take down a mafia family invading his turf. Right from the opening scene, Black Mass is violent and attention-grasping. If you’re squeamish and nervous about blood or violence, I don’t recommend this movie to you, but for mafia-enthusiasts and criminal history die-hards, Black Mass is the go-to movie for you!

Insidious Chapter 3

Article by Amaya Brooks

11/3/15

This movie came out a long time ago, but I just got to see it this weekend. In my opinion, this one was my least favorite. You’d have to see it to decide how you feel about it, but personally I was disappointed. This one is about a girl named Quinn whose mother had passed away from cancer. She tried to contact her, but she ends up drawing something referred to as “the man who can’t breathe.” Throughout the whole movie, Quinn tries to get away from this one entity. I didn’t like it because there was no variety like the first or second one. There were so many different characters and unexpected turns that it was hard not to be freaked out. The third one; however, was a lot more “been there, done that”.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Article by Peyton Hart

11/2/15

The Perks of Being a Wall Flower is written by Stephen Chbosky and is a best-selling novel. The story focuses on a boy named Charlie and his life as he adapts to high school. This book takes you on an emotional roller coaster, showing you the temptations, along with the lows and highs of high school. It contains things that everyone can relate to, not matter where you fit in. The book has more recently been adapted into a movie that is as well just as fantastic. If you aren’t the reading type, definitely pick up the movie and give it a go!

Divergent is the first book in the Divergent trilogy written by Veronica Roth. This book is set in the future, and the nation is divided into 5 different sections called factions. These factions are called Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Amity and Candor. The main character of the book, named Beatrice (Tris) Prior, switches from her faction Abnegation, which focuses on selflessness, to Dauntless, which focuses on bravery. Tris must discover who she wants to be, without the guidance of her family. She meets her friends, Christina, Will, Al, and Four who help teach her the ways of Dauntless life. This book focuses greatly on character development and shows how Tris goes from being a very shy, misunderstood person to an independent, outspoken character. The Civil Wars

Article by Amaya Brooks

10/27/15

"The Civil Wars" were an American folk or indie folk group. The members were Joy Williams and John Paul White. They met in 2008 and were together until 2014. Their music is still extremely remarkable. Williams and White both have amazing individual voices, but together the harmonies they make when they sing are outstanding. Their voices seem to flow together perfectly, and their work has a very different sound. They’ve worked with different artists and have made different albums. Some of these include some of the songs for the Hunger Games soundtrack.

Football has always been a big part of Bluefield High School. Recently, I found a game on the app store called Tap Sports Football. In this game, you have the ability to play against friends and challenge other players. The best part about it is that you only have to press one button! You also get to create your team and draft players on order to get your team ratings higher.

Hotel Transylvania 2

Article by Peyton Hart

10/21/15

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the sequel to the movie Hotel Transylvania and just released in theaters on September 25, 2015. This movie is a family film that is completely appropriate for all ages. This second movie revolves around the same hotel in the first, but now instead of only being available the monsters, it is open to humans. In this movie, we meet a new character, which is Dracula’s half human grandson named Dennis. Dracula does not want to accept the fact that his grandson may not be a monster, and takes drastic measures to bring the “monster instinct” out of him. This movie focuses around family development and what brings them closer together. Hotel Transylvania 2 is still in theaters!

The Great Gatsby

Article by Amaya Brooks

10/19/15

This is a very good movie to me. It’s about having the “American Dream,” and it truly captures the most honest perception of humanity I have ever seen. The movie is set back in the 20’s and really catches the glamorous side of the era. The main character, Nick Carraway, moved to the Big City with his cousin and her husband, Tom and Daisy Buchanan. However, later in the movie, Nick meets what he describes as “the most hopeful man he had ever met,” Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a millionaire that lives in a mansion next to Nick in West Egg. Although it may seem his passion is money, his true passion is for Daisy Buchanan. I won’t ruin the rest for you, but this movie is worth the see!

The Shining

Article by Samantha Hicks

10/15/15

The Shining is a horror novel written by Stephen King in 1977. The book is about a family of three: a mother, son, and father who all go to live in a hotel for 6 months due to the father becoming the winter caretaker. The Overlook hotel is cut off from civilization in the Colorado Mountains, and has a very evil and frightening past. The entire mood of the story in uncomfortable on purpose to give the reader a sense of uneasiness and terror throughout the entire story. The novel was eventually adapted into a movie, titled the same thing, in 1980. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred Jack Nicholson. It is regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made. The book was Stephen King’s first hardback bestsellers, and for good reason. It is truly terrifying.

The Maze Runner

Article by Amaya Brooks

10/12/15

The Maze Runner is a very exciting movie. It’s full of excitement, suspense, and most importantly, unexpected turns. Dylan O’Bryan gave a very good performance as Thomas, as did the rest of the cast. The movie had me on the edge of my seat. The plot of the movie is that these kids are put into this closed off civilization called “The Glade,” and they are surrounded by a huge maze. Thomas arrives, and from there he and the others begin to figure out a way of escaping through the deadly maze. As they figure out the maze, many things begin to change, and they all begin to encounter battles with these creatures called “Grievers.”  After they escape, a whole new adventure begins with the second part of this series that just came out called “The Scorch Trials.” Definitely worth the see!

Nicki Minaj and Why She Is a Better Influence Than You Think

Article by Samantha Hicks

10/3/15

Onika Tanya Maraj, known around the world as Nicki Minaj, is a female rapper born in Trinidad. She used to be known for dressing very loud and wacky, but she is starting to get a new reputation in 2015 and for good reason! There is nothing girls need more than a role model who teaches them how to be independent and care for themselves first, which Nicki preaches about at her concerts. She always tells her fans to stay in school and get a good education. Yet, because she is a black female rap artist, some adults find her to be vulgar and a bad influence. This is the exact opposite of what she is! She inspires young women to be themselves and get their own money, and to never let someone get them down. Nicki Minaj does not get the credit she deserves for being a role model.

Room

Article by Samantha Hicks

10/3/15

“Room” by Emma Donoghue is a novel published in 2010. The story is about a woman held in captivity by a kidnapper with her son, Jack. The story is very unique because it is told in the perspective of Jack. The main story line tells about Jack’s feelings and thoughts in the small room he was born into. Jack has never seen outside of the room they are being held in, and that affects how he thinks and feels about things. The way Jack’s mother tries to teach him about the outside world is very fascinating, and the way they eventually try to escape is very clever. The book has won Choice Award’s Best Fiction award, and it is a very interesting read.

Drake recently released a new song! Drake does a very smart thing where he releases songs unexpectedly on Soundcloud, and he waits for his fans to find out there is a new single that has been dropped. The song is about Drake missing a girl that used to call him when she wanted him to come over, and now she is a lot different. The beat is very catchy, and so is the chorus that goes “I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing”. Everyone was very excited when the song came out, and now everyone is singing it and blasting it in their car!

Anime and Manga

Article by Caitlin Belcher and Destany Goodloe

9/14/15

Anime and manga has been popularized in its home country – Japan. It has also reached western cultures and has blown up overseas. Anime is simply a Japanese animation style, and manga originates from Japan as well, but is often characterized as a graphic novel with depictions of characters from anime.  Many mangas can be adapted into anime. These two genres can be drawn traditionally (by hand) or digitally. Manga literally means “comics” or “whimsical images”. They both originated during the 1900’s. There are many sites of which one may view and browse anime and manga, some of these sites are free, but some require a subscription. Anime is not very popular on television. Cartoon Network’s sister program, Adult Swim, airs animes from time to time. They usually air on Saturday nights and have explicit content, such as sexual themes, violence, and language. Not all animes are rated for adults. There are animes with PG material. The animation style may be appealing to children, but content-wise, it can be very inappropriate.

Flyleaf

Article by Amaya Brooks

9/4/15

Flyleaf is not a new band; however, I feel their music is worth sharing. Flyleaf isn’t a band for everyone because they have such a unique sound. Ex vocalist, Lacey Sturm, really captured a very unique sound with her voice that you could recognize it anywhere. A lot of people may dislike the way she used her voice, but I almost feel refreshed because of the variety. She could go from singing with beautiful tones to screaming with such a passion. You can almost physically feel the raw emotion behind every one of their songs that she did. They’re new singer, Kristen May, is also a vocal power house. The emotion isn’t as evident, but she makes up for it with her talent she carried over from her ex band, Vendera. Flyleaf isn’t a band for everyone simply because of the almost unnatural sound they have managed to create, but I do recommend this band to anyone who doesn’t necessarily like “the norm”.

Pixels

Article by Sammantha Hicks

8/27/15

Pixels is a science fiction comedy movie that premiered in 2015.  The film was directed by Chris Columbus, and the screenplay was written by Tim Hirlihy. The film is about vintage video game characters, such as Pac-man, that are aliens invading Earth. Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, and Michelle Monaghan. These actors play as the arcade champions that are hired by the US Military to defend Earth.  I think it is a very funny movie, and I would highly recommend it. Adam Sandler has a hilarious performance, but even better is Peter Dinklage. The man who plays the famous Tyrion Lanister in Game of Thrones is hilarious in every way. His jokes are all executed well and often cause laughter to emerge from the crowd. It also is a nostalgia trip for older people who really enjoyed video games as a child. It was very exciting for the parents to see their childhood games on the big screen. That is why it is a good flick for all ages!
